Annotation:

After many years of waiting and rejection, the Lumbee Tribe has a chance to finally be federally recognized. The Senate Committee on Indian Affairs will hold a hearing on Sept. 7 to discuss the recognition of the tribe, among a few other topics.

If approved, this would amend the Lumbee Recognition Act of 1956 which granted them partial recognition, and it would allow the tribe to be eligible for new services and benefits. It would also allow for gaming endeavors, like building and operating casinos. The gaming decision is popular among Senate members, but it is not as popular in the House, according to Lumbee Attorney Arlinda Locklear.

The bill was introduced by Sen. Richard Burr on Nov. 17, 2015, who has been discussing Lumbee federal recognition with Lumbee Tribal Chairman Harvey Godwin, Jr. since Godwin was elected.
