Annotation:
Brief mention. Deloria, a Dakota Indian linguist, was sent to Pembroke by the Farm Security Administration to write a community pageant on the Lumbees. Murray quotes from two letters Deloria wrote to her advisor, Franz Boas, giving her impressions of them. She mentions their dislike of the name Croatan; physical appearance; disputes between Cherokee and Siouan factions; discrimination by Whites; and attendance of colleges outside North Carolina because of exclusion by all N.C. colleges except PSU.
