- his desire, after Vietnam service and observing the participation of Lumbee Dean Chavers in the Native American invasion of Alcatraz Island, to work to improve conditions in Robeson County;
- the “Save Old Main” movement;
- his becoming the first Native American to enter the law school at UNC-Chapel Hill and the first to graduate;
- the values he feels are important for a lawyer or judge;
- his Christian faith; and
- current conditions in Robeson County.
