Sider provides a comprehensive period by period analysis of Lumbee political history, with special attention to the intense activity during his field research (May 1967-Aug. 1968). Topics include: local explanations for Henry Berry Lowry’s deeds; the county’s role in the 1875 referendum to revise the state constitution; The Movement, a 1960’s Indian-Black coalition; social and political activities in various parts of the county; efforts to get “Indian money”; the political impact of landlord-tenant relations on county agriculture; and Indian locality leaders.
