“Croatan.” Robesonian 24 Jan. 1910: 1.
Annotation:
Orren (Aren?) Locklear and others supporting Godwin’s federal bill (entry 1320) have been led to believe that changing the tribal name to Cherokee could lead to “several millions of dollars at Washington.” The author of this article “[can] not see why any Indian should object to being known as Croatan.” Changing the name would lose the connection to the Lost Colony.
