During the October 15, 2015 meeting of the Lumbee Tribal Council, the council voted to support two health programs that were presented by the chair of the council’s Health Committee, Jan Lowery.
The first program involves early cancer screening intervention for American Indians, as well as Alaska natives. The tribe will assist by forming focus groups and conducting interviews needed to gather information that is key for researchers.
The second program, called N.C. Access to Recovery, is offered through the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services’ Division of Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities and Substance Abuse. It aims to help people who are addicted to alcohol or drugs recover by offering cultural services. The tribe will receive reimbursement for supplying these services, which include: dancing, drumming, quilting, kayaking and more.
Also during the meeting the council was presented a $2,000 check from AT&T for the tribe’s back-to-school supplies program, heard from Tribal Administrator Tony Hunt of 300 new tribal enrollments and learned that 30,000 phone calls were received and made from the tribe’s housing complex in the month of July.
