Lumbee Tribal Council member Larry Townsend has been elected as the vice president for the Southeast United States on the National Congress of American Indians. His term will last two years. Townsend will represent 30 total tribes, 10 that are federally-recognized tribes and 20 that are state-recognized tribes.
The National Congress of American Indians was started in 1944. It helps with issues like housing, education, health, environment, and treaty relationships between the tribes and the United States government.
Townsend, who held the same position from 2010-2012, will be one of 12 vice presidents across the country. He is the only vice president from a state-recognized tribe. Townsend said he aims to bring the interest and issues of his tribes to the table.
