The Lumbee musician who created the music for ‘Strike at the Wind!’ passed away Thursday. Willie French Lowery’s musical career lasted longer than 40 years. His song “Streets of Gold” was widely popular in the Carolinas, along with other states like Virginia, Philadelphia and New York. Lowery owned and managed Willie French Lowery Publishing, which started in 1977, and also owned Soundstation Recording Studio from 1994 to 2003. Lowery wrote the score for ‘Strike at the Wind!’, an outdoor drama telling the story of a Lumbee hero. Also, his 1979 album “Proud to Be a Lumbee” inspired pride throughout the community. Lowery died at Southeastern Regional Medical Center. He was 68 years old.
