Dwight Lowry was born in Pembroke, North Carolina in 1957. After playing three sports in high school, he went on to play baseball at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 1977 until 1980, when he was drafted by the MLB’s Detroit Tigers.

Lowry played catcher for 11 seasons of pro baseball, including four in the major leagues. Throughout his time in the MLB, he hit five homeruns and tallied 26 runs batted in (RBIs). He even had the opportunity to play for a World Series-winning team in 1984, when he was the backup catcher for the Tigers.

After his playing career, Lowry went into managing. He managed two minor league teams, the Fayetteville Generals and the Jamestown Jammers.

Lowry passed away from a heart attack in 1997 at the age of 39. After his death, the Detroit Tigers renamed their Player Development Man of the Year Award in honor of him.
