Annotation:

Notable Lumbee Kelvin Sampson recently visited East Carolina’s Minges Coliseum to coach a basketball game, and many friends and family came to the game to see and support him.

Kelvin’s father was a high school basketball coach, and he followed in his father’s footsteps. He is currently a head coach with the Houston Rockets after his reputation was tarnished by NCAA violations that led to his termination from coaching at Indiana. He is the only Native American to take a team to the Final Four. When Hurricane Harvey destroyed much of Robeson County last year, he worked with his brother Kellen to donate clothing, shoes, and other items to those displaced by the storm. He posted on social media about the need, and college and high school basketball programs around the country donated to the cause.
