Fowler, Scott. "Huntersville gymnast Ashton Locklear in Olympics limbo, but still celebrating." newsobserver.com [Raleigh, NC] July 15, 2016.
While gymnast Ashton Locklear did not make the 2016 Rio Olympic Team, she did qualify for the three-woman replacement team, which means she will travel to Rio. She will only compete if one of the other members gets hurt, and, if she doesn’t compete, she will not be eligible for a medal.
A sendoff party was thrown for Locklear in Huntersville at Everest Gymnastics. Locklear and the other 150+ gymnasts took pictures and celebrated her accomplishment. She will head to a 10-day training camp in Texas with the rest of the team, and then she will fly to Brazil a few days before opening ceremonies. Her family plans to attend.
Locklear will get the same gear as all other Olympic participants and will travel with the team. While the chances of her competing are slim, Locklear said it’s still going to be the experience of a lifetime.
