Rockett, Ali. "Fox show spotlights Lumbee Tribe tonight." Robesonian March 25, 2011.
Ben Chavis, a Robeson County native, prominent Lumbee Indian, and education champion, was featured on a Fox News special that aired on March 25, 2011 at 10pm called “Freeloaders.”
John Stossel, a Fox Business commentator, examined the obsession that some Americans have with getting paid for doing as little as possible.
A segment of the special featured Chavis “arguing that the federal government has turned American Indian tribes that have federal recognition into freeloaders,” according to a statement by producer Michael Ricci.
“I don’t need the government to tell me I’m Indian,” Chavis said. “We don’t want to be like those Indians out west.”
The Lumbee tribe has thrived for years without government aid. The tribe has produced many prominent community members.
The segment will also feature several successful Lumbee businesses, including Pembroke Hardware, JR Jones Grain Inc., East Coast Electrical Construction Inc., and Lumbee Guaranty Bank.
