“Pembroke Indian Conference Ends.” Scottish Chief 24 April 1961.
Lumbees hosted, at PSC, the Southeastern Regional Preparatory Conference for the American Indian Chicago Conference. This was the first time southeastern Indians met to discuss common problems. Lacy W. Maynor was the organizing chairperson. Called “the most inclusive meeting of Indians ever held in the U. S.,” the Chicago Conference was organized by Sol Tax and the University of Chicago (see Christian Century 78.27 (July 5, 1961): 819-20). For discussion of the Lumbee role in planning the Chicago Conference, see: Hauptman, Lawrence, and Jack Campisi. “The Voice of Eastern Indians: The American Indian Chicago Conference of 1961.” Proceedings of the American Philosophical Society 132.4 (Dec. 1988): 316-29.
