Romanticized description of a visit to Robeson County, in the “‘backwynds’ of North Carolina’s Blue Ridge.”  Describes John Cotsmuir, noting his Chaucerian speech, Saxon cross-bow, flint-lock musket, and Indian tomahawks.  Croatans recount for Terry the traditions of their journey from Roanoke to Robeson County, the story of Virginia Dare, and the “two-storeyed stone houses, forts, and water wheels” built by their Indian ancestors with instruction from the English.
