U.S. Rep. Health Shuler (D-N.C. 11th District) cosponsored, with U.S. Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-N.C. 10th District), a bill (H. R. 2022) that would require the Lumbee to go through the BIA's petition process to achieve true federal acknowledgment. Shuler opposes Congressional recognition of the Lumbee, as did his predecessor in representing North Carolina's 11th District, Charles Taylor (1991-Dec. 2006). This article quotes Shuler on his support of the Cherokee position: " 'Since 1978, there has been a clear process by which the federal government has recognized Native American tribes,' Shuler said. Having the Lumbees go before Congress 'circumvents that process and I join with Principal Chief Michell Hicks (of the eastern band of Cherokee Indians from Western North Carolina) in strongly opposing such legislation.' "
