Shiles, Bob. “Lumbee Tribal Council upholds 3-year enrollment rule.” The Robesonian (Lumberton, NC). May 20, 2016
The Lumbee Tribal Council upheld its rule that prohibits people who fail a Lumbee knowledge test from reapplying for tribal membership for a three-year period. Councilman Bobby Oxendine had proposed a one-year waiting period, but it was rejected by the council. In order to receive tribal benefits, you must be enrolled in the tribe.
Along with the regulation, there was a revision of the tribe’s ordinance that stated members of the tribe will now be called “citizens.” Councilman Larry Townsend noted that the words “citizen” and “citizenship” were much stronger than the previous terms. Also, 50-year citizenship cards will be issued to elders, free of charge, that can be used to vote.
In other news, Mabel Moses, who was Senior Miss Lumbee 2013-2014, spoke to the council during the meeting about where and when she was allowed to wear her crown.
