Annotation:

Representative Ron Sutton asserts that “there are no imminent dangers of the center closing.” He has cosponsored a bill to increase the number of members on the center’s Board of Directors and require that those representing education, local government, and business come from Robeson and adjacent counties. This measure should make it easier for board meetings to have a quorum and be able to transact business.

Lumberton senator David Weinstein admits he has heard that the center has problems but “there has been no groundswell in the legislature to develop the center.”

The article discusses funding the center has received, including $500,000 in 1985 to purchase the 456 acres for the site. Although the center “has received tens of thousands of dollars in state, federal, and foundation grants” since then, the total amount of state funding is unknown because the center’s record-keeping has been inadequate.
