“UNCP to Gain Designation.” Robesonian July 5, 2005.
This article announces that a state bill sponsored by Rep. Ron Sutton and co-sponsored by Reps. Garland Pierce and Doug Yongue will soon be signed by the governor. The bill will officially designate UNC-Pembroke as North Carolina's Historically American Indian University. Scott Bigelow, UNC-Pembroke's spokesperson, notes that the designation may lead to additional funding. The Board of Governors of the UNC System monitors the five historically black colleges and universities for equity funding in relation to capital improvements and facilities. UNC-Pembroke had been monitored in the same way but did not have a stated designation or statutory requirement.
This law can be found in the North Carolina General Statutes as the following:
§ 116-40.8. University of North Carolina at Pembroke designated as North Carolina's Historically American Indian University
