Robeson County’s agriculture, an industry that brings approximately $420 million to the local economy, was hit hard by the destruction brought by Hurricane Matthew. Farmers are looking to meet with Rep. Richard Hudson to discuss further action.

While crops like peanuts and sweet potatoes were likely hit the hardest, the natural disaster did not cause a total loss. However, because of current conditions, officials are unable to tell the full damage. Hudson, who represents North Carolina’s 8th district, used to represent Robeson County. However, with the recent re-zoning of the districts, he no longer does. Still, Hudson says his heart lies in the county.

Mac Malloy, a Cooperative Extension agent for field crops in Robeson County, said these recent floods were impossible to prepare for. In an attempt to get up and running again, the director of the farm services agency has applied for money to clear trees from agriculture land and washouts.

The soybean crops in Robeson County continue to stand, more so than others. However, because farmers can’t get to the plants right now, because of mud and other issues, there is a chance some will be effected by overwatering and sitting flood water.
