Annotation:

A Facebook petition started by self-proclaimed community advocate Eric Locklear is calling for the Lumbee Tribal Supreme Court to make a decision on whether or not current Tribal Chairman Paul Brooks can run for another term, preferably that he cannot.

Brooks, who is serving his second term but only his fourth year as Tribal Chairman, has yet to file to become a candidate. The Lumbee Tribal Constitution says that a chairman can serve a maximum of two three-year terms, but it does not specify what it means by “term.”

Locklear’s goal is for the petition to gather at least 200 signatures by June 28, 2015. If that happens, he hopes to see a result of some kind by the 2015 annual homecoming celebration. Sheila Beck-Jones, who is the chairman of the Elections Board, said Brooks will be treated like any other candidate should he decide to run again for the position.

The Elections Board has yet to set a date on when a candidate must file but is expected to do so in their meeting on June 26, 2015.
