The author gives an engagingly written, concise but detailed account of a canoe trip with Dr. Neill Lee Sr., a Lumberton physician. Along with the trip description, he includes background information on the importance of the river to Lumbee people; how the river got its name; the proposed hazardous waste treatment plant whose siting on the river was successfully blocked by local citizens; the section of the river that was designated as the Lumber River State Park in 1989; and foliage and wildlife that can be seen along the river.
