Ruth Woods has served as an advocate for the Lumbee, for Native Americans in North Carolina, and for women in a variety of capacities. The following are just a few examples. She was director of Indian education for the Robeson County Public Schools for a number of years. From 1979-1982 she served on the planning committee which handled the legislative creation of the North Carolina Commission on Indian Affairs. She was a co-organizer and Board member, in 1979, of the Lumbee Regional Development Association. She won the Henry Berry Lowry Award in 1980.
