Brief article describing the ceremony, attended by over 800 people and held on Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001 at the Southeastern Regional Agricultural Center/Farmer's Market in Lumberton. Some highlights of the ceremony included: an overview of Lumbee history, which Dr. Helen Maynor Schierbech told in story form to Lumbee children;remarks from Jim Lowry, chairperson of the Lumbee Self Determination Committee; Willie Lowery, singing “Proud to be a Lumbee”;the swearing in of the 23 tribal council members by Chief District Court Judge Gary Locklear; the swearing in of Tribal Chairman Milton Hunt by Superior Court Judge Dexter Brooks; and the blessing of the tribal government members by Earl Carter, Ray Littleturtle, and Tony Clark.
