Baxley, Rodd. “Robeson County athletes, coaches answer call for help.” Robesonian (Lumberton, NC). October 14, 2016.
This article follows student-athletes and coaches of Robeson-area schools and how they are involved in the wake of Hurricane Matthew and the damage that the storm caused.
Over 1,500 people were displaced in Robeson County because of the hurricane. Lumberton High School has been organizing donations with help from their student-athletes and coaches. These donations include clothes, food and other items. There was also notable outreach from Bladen County.
The article also mentioned Purnell Swett High School, which housed over 800 people who were forced out of their homes. Red Springs, South Robeson and St. Pauls are also being used as shelters.
The student-athletes are not only helping with donations, but also morale. Baseball games and pick-up basketball contests have been organized by students and coaches for those forced to live in the high schools. Many agree that is has been a nice change of pace and helped those in the unfortunate situation get their mind off the hurricane damage.
