Thorough, wide-ranging, and extensively researched, this paper explains, with many specific examples, a triad of characteristics (the land, the people, and religion) which Lumbees exhibit in their orientation toward life and in political or economic concerns. These characteristics are distinctly Native American. Also illustrates three Lumbee political techniques (alliance-building, interference, and the role of the individual) that surface when any of the characteristics are threatened.
