Wurth-Hough, Sandra J. “The Dialectic of the Lumbee People and Their Polity.” Paper presented at the Western Social Science Annual Convention, 1990? 17 p.

Annotation:

Thorough, wide-ranging, and extensively researched, this paper explains, with many specific examples, a triad of characteristics (the land, the people, and religion) which Lumbees exhibit in their orientation toward life and in political or economic concerns. These characteristics are distinctly Native American. Also illustrates three Lumbee political techniques (alliance-building, interference, and the role of the individual) that surface when any of the characteristics are threatened.
