A difficult question is whether to view Long Lance as “a charlatan and a fraud, or ... a man who desperately wanted to break out of the chains that society had cast upon him.” Acknowledges Long’s skills as a writer and field worker among native peoples but rues the editorial license he often took, telling events as if they happened to him.
