Brief mention. Catharine Whyte, the main character in this novel set before and during the Civil War, leaves Scotland with her husband to set up a farm and a ministerial practice in the Robeson County area. Later in life, she goes to Scuffletown for three weeks and uses medicinal herbs to treat a smallpox outbreak among the Croatans (pp. 111-127). The novel is “based on [Johnson’s] family’s migration from Scotland to America” (Dictonary of North Carolina Biography, vol. 3 [UNC Press, 1988], p. 290). The Whytes are mentioned in entries 1054 and 1057.
