Read & Publish Deals

Publish Open Access

Appalachian State University Libraries have established partnerships with academic publishers to cover the Article Processing Charges (APCs) that are applied to open access publication in some journals and usually fall to the author.

These read and publish deals, also known as transformative arrangements, are designed so that the library absorbs the expense of the open access publishing option with these journals.

We are pleased to support open access scholarship for Appalachian State University personnel, including faculty, students, and staff, through these deals. Each publisher provides specific instructions for authors to follow, and they vary, so make sure to submit the information accordingly to receive the benefit.

APCs Fully Covered

Elsevier

Authors affiliated with Appalachian State may publish open access in select Elsevier hybrid journals at no charge to the author. This agreement covers Elsevier's "Core-Hybrid" titles", but Cell Press, Lancet, Clinics, and select Society titles are not included. The article must be accepted between January 1, 2025, and December 31, 2027, and the corresponding author must be affiliated with Appalachian State University at the time of acceptance. This page will be updated with a list of eligible article types as soon as those details are available. Full-length research articles will be included.

To ensure your article is published OA, use your @appstate.edu email address and select Appalachian State as your institutional affiliation when submitting your article. Confirm your affiliation when prompted after acceptance, and select the option to publish open access under Appalachian State and the Carolina Consortium's agreement. This agreement operates on an annual quota of APC tokens; it is possible that they may run out towards the end of the calendar year.

The Microbiology Society

Appalachian University Libraries' contract with the Microbiology Society covers article processing charges for Appalachian authors in all six of their journals: Microbiology; Journal of General Virology; Journal of Medical Microbiology; Microbial Genomics; International Journal of Systemic and Evolutionary Microbiology; and Access Microbiology.

Springer Nature

Beginning in late February 2024, as part of the Carolina Consortium Springer Nature Open Access deal, Appalachian State now has access to a shared pool of 522 APCs for use on all the hybrid journals in Springer's portfolio, on a first-come, first-served basis for the first year of a three-year deal. The corresponding author must be currently affiliated with a participating institution, and should use their institutional email address. Wiley

In 2025, as members of the Carolina Consortium, Appalachian State University authors are eligible to publish open access free of charge in any of Wiley’s hybrid or fully OA journals, with the following stipulations.  The article must be primary research or a review article. Articles in fully OA journals must be submitted between January 1, 2025, and December 31, 2027. Articles in hybrid journals must be accepted between January 1, 2025, and December 31, 2027. The corresponding author must be affiliated with Appalachian State at the time of acceptance.

For 2025 onward, there is no cap or quota for APC waivers on articles in Wiley’s hybrid journals, but for fully OA journals, please note, this consortial agreement operates on an annual quota of APC tokens for articles, and it is possible that they may run out of tokens for participating schools toward the end of the calendar year. If you have available grant funding to cover APCs, we encourage you to use those funds first if publishing in a fully OA journal.

Follow the directions for publishing in Wiley’s fully open access or hybrid journals in the links below, using "Appalachian State University" as your institution.

If submitting to a hybrid journal, and you don't order open access initially, your manuscript will be published under the traditional closed access model. You may order open access retroactively, but once your paper is published in Early View or In Issue online you are no longer eligible to publish at no charge.
