In 2023 Appalachian University Libraries has established a few new partnerships with academic publishers, and continued, or expanded upon, existing deals to cover the Article Processing Charges (APCs) that are applied to open access publication in some journals and usually fall to the author.
These read and publish deals, also known as transformative arrangements, are designed so that the library absorbs the expense of the open access publishing option with these journals.
We are pleased to support open access scholarship for Appalachian State University personnel, including faculty, students, and staff, through these deals. Each publisher provides specific instructions for authors to follow, and they vary, so make sure to submit the information accordingly to receive the benefit.
APC’s Fully Covered
American Chemical Society

The American Chemical Society publishes more than seventy-five journals in chemistry and related fields, including medicine, nanoscience, engineering, environmental studies, computer science, telecommunications, physics, and more.

Wiley
In 2023, as members of the Carolina Consortium, Appalachian State University authors are eligible for the expanded shared voucher program with the academic publisher Wiley. The vouchers are now applicable to every one of Wiley’s more than 1,600, often science-oriented, peer-reviewed academic journals.
This year the consortium received 735 vouchers, which grant authors publishing in any of Wiley's journals the option of making their article open access without paying an APC.
It’s worth noting that while the vouchers are intended to cover the consortium’s publications for the calendar year, once the voucher pool is exhausted, corresponding authors will instead be eligible for a 10% discount on article processing charges. As the year progresses, if you want to inquire about voucher availability, email Natalie Foreman.
