During the Lumbee Tribal Council meeting on Thursday June 18, 2015, the majority voted and agreed to purchase 88 acres on Candy Park Road for $704,920, while also getting 100 acres of tribal-owned land in Raynham. The property is owned by Venture Properties of Pembroke.

The council’s final vote was 9-7. Main opposition was from those on the Lumbee Tribal Reform group. Group leader Eric Locklear noted that the $700,000 could be used to benefit tribe members not just in the Pembroke area. Other opposition noted that the 100 acres from Raynham could have been used as a community center for that area.

Anita Hammonds Blanks, a council member, opposed the sale because of the recent declaration by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development that said the tribe could not purchase any additional land with federal funds until it uses the land it already has.

Tribal Administrator Tony Hunt said that the plan for the land was to build single-family homes for veterans. In other news, the council also approved for the tribal administration to borrow money to purchase and construct a single-family home on a lot in Lumberton.
