Reverend Welton Lowry was born in Pembroke on September 26, 1913. He went on to graduate from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke (UNC-P), and then he attended graduate school at George Peabody University in Nashville, Tennessee.
Lowry was a minister for 69 years, and he spent the majority of that time at West End Baptist Church in Lumberton. He also went to Washington, D.C. many times to lobby for federal recognition for the Lumbee Tribe.
Lowry received many awards, including: the Henry Berry Lowrie Award, the Leo Reno Award, Lion of the Year, the UNC-P Distinguished Service Award, the George Peabody University Distinguished Service Award and more.
For all that is mentioned above, and more, Lumberton declared September 26, 1984 as Welton Lowry Day. Lowry passed away on March 12, 2004 at the age of 91.
