Citation:
Jenkins, Venita. “Maxton wants Tribe-Klan clash site.” Fayetteville Observer 20 March 2002.
Annotation:
A group of prospective buyers is negotiating with L&S Holdings (Laurinburg), owner of the property, to purchase Hayes Pond (west of Maxton) and donate it to the town. The property would be managed by Preserve Maxton, who would seek grant funding to establish a park. Besides the 1958 Ku Klux Klan routing, the pond has been the site of saw, flour, grist, and electricity-generating mills since before 1816.
GreenVest, a New Jersey company, completed a field evaluation report on the property for L&S Holdings. The report praised the property's historical significance, ecological value (especially the wildlife and bird habitat), and recreational potential.
