Citation:

Quillin, Martha. “Pembroke, Home of the Braves, Shies Away from Mascot’s Image.” News and Observer [Raleigh, NC] 6 Feb. 1992: 1A.

Annotation:

PSU Chancellor Joseph Oxendine banished the mascot, a “hideous” depiction of a brave which he felt was “not the image we ought to be projecting of American Indians.” He also disallowed the sale of toy tomahawks which were ordered as favors for the homecoming game. See also editorials on this action, Robesonian 10 Feb. 1992: 4A and 17 Feb. 1992: 4A (by Oxendine). Following consultation with faculty, students, alumni, consultants, and the community, PSU adopted a new logo, showing an Indian brave and a hawk, drawn by Gloria Tara Lowery (Robesonian 22 July 1992: 1B). For Oxendine’s official statement on the new mascot (the red-tailed hawk), see Robesonian 24 Sept. 1992: 1B. For the unveiling of the mascot, see Robesonian 2 Dec. 1992: 1B.
