The 32,000 Lumbees in a seven-county area suffer three-way segregation in schools and numerous other facilities. Discusses the 1960 Dunn school sit-ins; AFSC’s assistance to Sampson County Indians in fighting inadequate facilities in their 300-student school; and a 1960 lawsuit by Indians in Lumberton over a city annexation.  Notes that “there has been little or no organized activity among the Lumbees for civil rights.”  Concludes that an intensive community relations program to deal with school desegregation and other problems involving the three races is “vitally needed.”
