Meacham, Jody. "Lumbee gymnast Ashton Locklear named alternate for U.S. Olympics team." Robesonian [Lumberton, NC]. July 12, 2016.
It was announced that 18-year-old Lumbee gymnast Ashton Locklear would be going to Rio de Janeiro as an alternate for the United States gymnastics team to compete in the 2016 Summer Olympics.
Locklear was disappointed that she was not chosen as part of the official five-person team, but was also joyful to be chosen as an alternate and to have the opportunity to go and possibly compete. Locklear, a bars specialist, was beat in the Olympic Trials by her friend and rival Madison Kocian, who did make the team.
Before she leaves, Locklear will return home to North Carolina for a week before heading to Rio, where she will stay for an estimated three weeks with fellow Olympic gymnasts Simone Biles, Gabby Douglas, Laure Hernandez, Aly Raisman, and Kocian.
