Annotation:
On May 18, 2016, the Lumbee Tribe met with members of the Smithsonian Institution to discuss plans for the National Native American Veterans Memorial that is to be constructed on the National Mall in Washington, DC. The meeting was held at the Boys and Girls Club in Pembroke, North Carolina, and it was one of eight stops across the entire country that the Smithsonian members made to discuss the project with various tribes.
The United States Department of Defense estimates that more than 150,000 veterans self-identify as American Indian (or an Alaskan Native). The Smithsonian’s goal is to finish the memorial by 2019.
