Shiles, Bob. "Tribal Council rejects Porter as administrator." Robesonian [Lumberton, NC] August 17, 2016.
Freda Porter, Tribal Chairman Harvey Godwin Jr.’s recommendation for tribal administrator, was rejected by the Lumbee Tribal Council.
Porter is the president and CEO of Porter Scientific Inc., which is a business that provides environmental consulting services, research and support. She received a bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, a master’s degree from North Carolina State University and a doctorate from Duke University. Among other esteemed awards, Porter received the 2010 Stellar Award from the U.S. Women’s Chamber of Commerce.
Council members cited a need for more information as the reason Porter was rejected. Godwin has been criticized recently for his lack of communication with the council. One example they pointed to was the fact that Porter was given the job of tribal director, a position Godwin created specifically for her, without the knowledge of the Lumbee Tribal Council.
The council has not ruled out Porter becoming the eventual tribal administrator, but have said they will need more communication with her and Godwin before any further steps are taken.
