Annotation:

Harvey Godwin Jr. beat out the incumbent Lumbee Tribal Chairman Paul Brooks in the November 16, 2015 Lumbee Tribal Election. Godwin bested Brooks, along with three others, in the running for the top elected position in the tribe. Godwin won by 729 votes, 41.7 percent of the total votes, giving him the majority. On Tuesday, the night of the election, Godwin was not yet ready to announce his initial plans.

Godwin is the owner of Two Hawk Employment Services in Lumberton. He is new to politics and, throughout his campaign, emphasized a new vision for the tribe that centered on keeping tribal members informed.

Aside from Brooks, Godwin beat out Tribal Council member Terry Collins, health care services business owner Bobbie Jacobs Ghaffar, and Lumbee Tribal culture expert and pastor Lynn B. Jacobs. Brooks was almost unable to run again, as he had served one year after Chairman Purnell Sweet’s term, and then served a regular three-year term. The Lumbee Supreme Court had decided to let him run, but he could only hold the spot for two years if he had won.

Seven seats in the Tribal Council were also up for grabs. To see the winners in Districts 1, 4, 5, 7, 9, 10, and 14, please refer to the original article.
