Hurricane Matthew caused considerable damage to Robeson County. There were 26 total deaths in Eastern North Carolina as the state got fourth months’ worth of rain in 12 hours. 50,000 people in the county were affected, according to Tribal Chairman Harvey Godwin.

During the storm, the American Red Cross helped the tribe conduct a house-to-house evacuation and relocation. Also, the flood water carried bacteria, which could make people sick if it got in the blood stream or on the face.

The National Congress of American Indians sent out an alert at its convention the week prior, saying: “Due to Hurricane Matthew and extensive flooding, North Carolina tribes are in need of assistance for supplies and contributions.”
