Robeson County implemented a new policy which permits county employees to make prenatal doctor's visits without charging them to sick or vacation leave. Husbands are given the same privilege so that they can attend the appointments with their wives. One impetus for the new policy was the fact that for the previous five years, Robeson County had the second highest infant mortality rate in North Carolina among counties with a population over 100,000. In addition, as of this article's publication date, 435 of the county's 700 employees were female. Taking leave for 12-14 prenatal doctor's appointments would use up significant amounts of employees' leave time that would be needed after the child was born.
