Annotation:

Recently, the North Carolina State Senate granted unanimous approval to a heavily-revised version of Senate Bill 554. The bill, which could lead to school consolidation through closing 30 schools and building 14 more, is now headed to the House, and possibly the desk of Governor Pat McCrory.

Originally, Senate Bill 554 would have allowed state money to be used for a lease-purchase agreement that has been proposed by the Raleigh firm, sfL+a Architects. They would use the savings generated by closing the schools to build the new ones.

Senator Wesley Meredith, the bill’s sponsor, said that it could allow local school systems to enter into operating leases using local dollars. At first, the Treasurer’s Office was against the bill because of predicted insurmountable debt for the county, but now they are on board after learning more information.
