East Carolina  University. Joyner Library. Manuscript Collection. Guide to the James William Cole Papers, 1863, 1946-1967 (Manuscript Collection #40).

Annotation:

Cole was the Klan wizard who organized, and was scheduled to speak during, the Klan rally at Maxton Pond on January 18, 1958. The Klan members were dispersed during a rowdy but nonviolent uprising of Lumbee Indians, who far outnumbered them. The Lumbees were armed mainly with squirrel guns and hunting knives.
Four individuals sustained minor injuries. Cole received a two-year sentence.

This finding aid notes that Cole's papers, primarily correspondence he received during his imprisonment (1959-1960), include many clippings about the Maxton rally and his trial.
