Lumbee Tribal Chairman Purnell Swett confirmed Friday, May 13, 2011 that he is resigning. He is citing health issues, not the release of the HUD report, as the reason for his resignation.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development issued a report finding the Lumbee Tribe to be out of compliance on several issues. The tribe will be required to reimburse the federal government almost $115,00 spent on noncompliant contracts and misused housing funds.

Swett had been admitted to the hospital while in office. "It has become very apparent that the continuous stress of chairmanship has become detrimental to my health," Swett said in a statement.

Swett took office January 14, 2010, and his administration has been a continuous power struggle between him and the Tribal Council. He had about a year and half left on his term.
