Bidgood, Jess. "North Carolina, still reeling from Hurricane Matthew, stares at Irma." NY Times [New York, NY] September 8, 2017.
Lumberton still has marks of last year’s Hurricane Matthew, including sand brought in by the storm and ruined, abandoned homes. The flooding killed 31 people in NC and displaced thousands. Still recovering, residents have a new threat: Hurricane Irma.
“‘If Irma comes, I need cots here, I need generators, I need a stove, I need food,’” said Adrienne Kennedy (para. 4). Even if Irma doesn’t hit NC, the damage from Hurricane Matthew could be a preview of what Irma does to other areas. The recovery has been slow and the hit has been especially hard for low-income neighborhoods.. FEMA has frozen funding of many projects from last year’s storm.
