Author and attorney Jojo Shifflett will soon be releasing a book exploring her American Indian heritage called “A Lumbee Gershom.” The book is based on an essay she wrote for the National Museum of the American Indian in 2009.
Shifflett herself was raised in Washington D.C, but her grandparents lived in Pembroke, North Carolina. In the 1970s, she participated in protests with her grandfather. Shifflett eventually graduated from Georgetown University in 1999 and went on to serve as majority staff attorney for the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs.
While the book has yet to be published, Shifflett hopes to sell copies at the Lumbee tribe’s homecoming celebration in Pembroke that spans from June 25, 2016 to July 2, 2016.
