Record Number:

“Are the Robeson County, N.C., outlaws KuKlux?” New York Times May 16, 1871, p.1.

Brief mention. Notes that some Northern newspapers reported, based on a telegram the Associated Press sent from Wilmington on May 10, that the outlaws are KuKlux. The article states that this is erroneous and that “Lowry, Applewhite and Strong, the recognized leaders of the band, are all negroes.”
