Annotation:

Howard Brooks’ Tuscaroras, as part of their 100-mile, four-day caravan to Raleigh, tried to march through Smithfield, then known as headquarters for the Ku Klux Klan in southeastern North Carolina.  On arriving, they were arrested, told they could not march without a permit, and harassed by the Klan.  More Indians arrived to support them; the charges were dropped and a permit was issued.
