Annotation:
Nathan McMillan, by reputation a slave whose father was White, married a Croatan and obtained a statement from the county Board of Education that his children could attend a Croatan school. The school committee refused them admittance. The Superior Court and the state Supreme Court upheld this decision, stating that McMillan’s children were Negro to the fourth generation.
