Townsend, George Alfred, comp. The Swamp Outlaws: or, The North Carolina Bandits; being a complete history of the modern Rob Roys and Robin Hoods. The Red Wolf Series. New York: Robert M. DeWitt, 1872. Another edition: The Swamp Outlaws of North Carolina. Philadelphia: Old Franklin Publishing House, 1872.
The New York Herald sent correspondents to Robeson County to cover the deeds of the Lowry Gang. This book compiles their letters to the Herald. The account makes no attempt at journalistic impartiality; its style aims at titillating readers. The Old Franklin edition adds “Miss Patton’s account of her experiences among them while a prisoner in their hands.” See comments by Evans (entry 1118), p. 272.
